Meet Some of Our Members
Here is a list of some of our members who have chosen to make their profiles public.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How much does it cost to be a member of Big Sky Toastmasters?
A. Toastmasters dues are $46 every 6 months, and local club dues add $14 to each payment to cover the meeting room fees and other expenses. This works out to a cost of $60 every 6 months. This will be the best money you have ever spent to improve yourself! Many employers offer to cover this cost for their employees, as it is such valuable training in critical communication skills.
Q.Can I see an example of a Big Sky Toastmasters speech online?
A. We ocasionally film our members speeches, but only make them public if the member agrees to post the video. The videotaping is done purely on per request basis, it's function is purely educational and is by default private to the member who requested to be videotaped.
Q. What happens if I freeze and can't think of anything to say?
A. All members have at one time or another lost their train of thought when speaking before the group. Most new members have felt terror in this moment and feared that the world would end or they would lose their desire to improve their public speaking skills. In our club, there is absolutely no shame if this happens. Our club even welcomes it because we know that it is the benchmark of a brave new Toastmaster! Even those with the greatest fear seem to move past the "freezing up" stage within one to two meetings. In short, Big Sky Toastmasters is a great place to practice, to work out all of our issues in a safe, supportive community. We would rather make our mistakes within the club, so that when a real public speaking opportunity presents itself, we are polished and confident!
Q. How are topics chosen for speeches?
A. Each member chooses their own speech topics. The general rule is to speak about what excites you, what you already know or want to learn about. Enthusiasm comes naturally when we chose a topic this way. Members do work through manuals which suggest that we focus on certain skill sets to employ in a given speech. However, the manuals never require that members speak on a given topic. Choosing a speech subject will come easy once you have been to our meetings and enjoyed others speeches. Because our membership is so diverse, every meeting is like a variety show. The topics are always very entertaining!
